Starcraft II Game Design
Not a deep dive, but I made a little graphic to show how deep the design of these games must have gone.
Well, since I’ve already started typing, I may as well add a bit more.
As you’ll see my my Tiktok, the Starcraft II design team made a genius design choice, but first, a geek out.
The game of Starcraft has long been a personal favorite of mine. I played the original since release, even before brood war, and all the way to Starcraft II. I followed the amazing stories of the professional players, the rise and fall of champions, the struggles and triumphs of the starcraft community, all of it. This game is responsible for some of the best friendships I’ve had, both online and offline. I literally went to Korea, twice, just to watch Starcraft matches live. I had the honor of meeting SlayerS_’Boxer’ and to meet the legendary casters Tasteless and Artosis. They even talked about a sign I was holding and then spent the next 10 minutes of the match commenting around my sign. I was in bliss hearing their voices say my name. Okay okay.. that’s enough.. Anyway game design.
So as you can see, the choice to represent three incredible unique races required taking it all the way back to the foundations of design; the three primary colors and the primary basic shapes. And the rest is history.
