Sardines

Sardines. It’s like Hide & Seek but better.

Description

  • A variant of hide & seek with such an interesting twist that it far surpasses the fun of hide & seek.

Parameters

  • Can accommodate any number of players if you can find a suitable location to accommodate them all.

  • Doesn’t require any equipment.

  • Does require a suitable location, sometimes the trickiest component.

  • Rules are very easy.

  • Suitable for any age.

Rules & Game flow

  • You’ll want to find a place to play that has a lot of good hiding spots. A good rule of thumb is to have a location that has as many rooms as there are players. Often times the best place is your own home. We’ll reference a house going forward as the location example.

  • Ideally you want to play this at night, in the dark.

  • Once you’ve convinced everyone to play (which is an entirely separate topic), gather them all at the entrance of the house or another spot that is away from the prime hiding spots.

  • One person, chosen at random, goes into the house and finds the best hiding spot they can find. This person will be referred to as the Original Sardine.

  • After a few minutes the remaining players are set loose into the house.

  • Their objective is to find the Original Sardine and, most importantly, hide with the Original Sardine as best they can. Either squeeze in where they are or find an adjacent hiding spot as effectively as you can. You want to be as discrete as possible when hiding so as to not alert the other seekers.

  • As the game goes on, players will find the Original Sardine and hide with them. Over time the number of seekers running around will start to dwindle and those remaining seekers will wonder where everyone went. All the while, those that are hiding are trying to hold back giggles and laughter from the silliness of the situation.

  • Once everyone finds the hiding spot, or shamefully gives up, the round is over.

  • A new round can be played with the first seeker to have find the Original Sardine getting the honor of being the first to hide in the new round.

Conclusion

  • That’s it! That’s the game. Very simple ruleset, but a whole lotta fun.

  • Oh, and the game is called Sardines because you are all trying to squeeze into a hiding spot like a can of sardines.
